Jan 03, 2013 (LBO) – Sri Lanka will issue coins with a face of 10 rupees to depict each district in the country in 2013, the Central Bank has said in a road map for monetary policy. Sri Lanka has 25 administrative districts.
Central Bank Governor Nivard Cabraal also said Wednesday a program will be launched to put coins that are tied up in piggy-banks and tills in temples and churches back into circulation.
Unlike inflationary paper money, the metal in coins sometimes costs more than its face value.
Coins made of metals such as gold and silver, made it impossible for the state and rulers to generate inflation in the past.
