April 17, 2010 (LBO) – Sri Lanka’s military and the US Navy and conducted joint exercises on disaster readiness and medical response in the Eastern port city area of Trincomalee, the US embassy in Colombo said. “The joint exercise helped members from our two militaries to exchange best practices on how to address complex humanitarian challenges,” Larry Smith, U.S. Defense Attache in Colombo said in a statement.
“U.S. and Sri Lanka have a long tradition of cooperation. We hope this partnership can be expanded.”
The exercise had included Sri Lankan military officials, US military officials from its special operations command Pacific, civilians from the Sri Lanka health ministry and disaster management centre.
A training seminar had included advanced trauma medical care, coping with post-traumatic stress, preventive health care and the safe disposal of unexploded ordnance.
The joint teams of US and Sri Lankan military personnel and civilian health workers had worked with people from 27 rural communities and visited over 700 families in Sri Lanka.
