Sri Lankan Airlines risk passenger safety with poor pilot training standards

Apr 07, 2015 (LBO) – Sri Lankan Airlines has scared passengers away by recruiting cadet pilots who repeatedly failed entrance tests, a government minister said.

“Those who failed the required exams were eventually recruited on verbal requests from the airlines former management.” Education minister Akila Viraj Kariyawasam told reporters Tuesday.

The board of inquiry (BoI) headed by senior lawyer J. C. Weliamuna has also found several attempts were made to lower, the pass marks for recruiting pilots.

The BoI in their report has praised two senior pilots who had resigned in protest.

“Their resignation effectively prevented the selection of unsuitable candidates in the 2013 Cadet Pilot intake.” the report further revealed.
