May 15, 2015 (LBO) – Sri Lanka’s coalition government has invited Northern Provincial Councilors to attend the victory day celebrations which will be held next week in Southern Sri Lanka.
“We are inviting all. We’ll see whether they are coming,” cabinet spokesman Rajitha Senaratne said.
“We are not going to commemorate this as a war victory. We commemorate that day as a victory of a struggle against separatism,”
“And as a respect to those who sacrificed their lives and those who became disabled while saving the country.” Senaratne said.
Meanwhile a remembrance week is currently underway in Sri Lanka and Tamil Nadu for Tamils killed in the last phase of island’s bloody civil war.
The first ceremony was recently held in Vellamullivaikkal in the Mullaitivu District with the participation of TNA Northern Provincial Councilor M.K. Sivajilingam.
“They are not commemorating the LTTE. They are remembering those who got killed. It’s obvious that the LTTE cadre will also get commemorated,”
“There is extremism on every side. But that is limited today. That’s the only victory we have.” Rajitha Senaratne further added.
