Sri Lanka’s pensioners to get a digital ID

Oct 11, 2014 (LBO) – Sri Lanka’s Department of Pensions launches a digital identity card for pensioners in partnership with Sampath Bank, a private lender in the island, the bank said in a media release. The official launch of the card held 9th September 2014 at Pensioners ’Resort in Kelaniya with the participation of over 3000 pensioners to mark the Pensioners’ Day.

Over 600,000 pensioners in the country are expected to benefit from the Digital Identity Card in their banking transactions, the banks said.

Sampath Bank is expecting to issue the cards in the near future through its branches.

Depending on the requirement, biometric details of pensioners also can be included in the card and the department would also add WNOP details, medical history which can be used in emergencies such as obtaining medical treatments.

The bank plans to provide the Department of Pensions with 25 computers, as a measure to further streamline the pension payment and to facilitate direct coordination with the department.
