“We hope that you, as the person responsible for national security, will take immediate steps in this regard,” the JVP said in a three-page letter released to the media and addressed to President Chandrika Kumaratunga.

Kumaratunga depends on the JVP for survival in parliament where her own party is in a minority. There has been friction between Kumaratunga and the JVP over the handling of international relief aid.

The JVP, which is also against any concessions to Tamil Tiger guerrillas, is against foreign aid going directly to rebel-held areas of the island’s northeast.
