Sri Lanka’s ruling party wins Provincial Council Election

Sep 22, 2014 (LBO) – Sri Lanka’s United Peoples Freedom Alliance, the ruling party in the island won the Uva Provincial Council Election with 19 seats while UNP, the main opposition secured 13 seats, data of Department of Election showed. Harin Fernando, UNP’s Uva Provincial Council candidate topped the preferential votes securing 173,993 votes and Shashindra Rajapaksa UPFA’s Uva Provincial Council candidate was second with 96,619 votes.

The Democratic Party and National Freedom Front did not win any seats in the Provincial Council. Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP) received two seats in the provincial council election.

Uva Provincial Council Election held Saturday 20th September 2014.

UPFA has received 349,906 votes which accounts for 51.21 percent, while UNP votes standing at 274,773 accounts for 40.24 percent and JVP acquired total votes numbering 36,580.
