“The Minister said there was no question of withdrawing the Cabinet paper, but that the government will not go ahead with it without trade union agreement,” said Weerasinghe.

On Wednesday, the Engineers Union went public with threats of an island wide blackout if the government goes ahead with plans to restructure the CEB without trade union input.

After the announcement, around 30 CEB trade unions met the Minister of Power and Energy, Susil Premajayantha and top government officials.

The Engineers Union met the Minister and the Treasury Secretary, P B Jayasundara for another round of bargaining on Thursday morning.
