July 26, 2011 (LBO) – Sri Lanka’s mobile users grew 18.5 percent in the first quarter of 2011 to 17.8 million, a lower pace than in previous years, but there was strong growth in internet users, official data showed. A category called ‘internet and email’ users which the central bank said included mobile broadband connection showed an explosive 169 percent growth in the first quarter from a year earlier.
Against the December 2010 quarter, the category grew 57 percent.
Sri Lanka has had mobile user growths in excess of 30 percent for several years but the country only has a population of 20 million, according to data published by the Central Bank.
Fixed access users grew 3.7 percent in the first quarter to 3.59 million with wirelines users also growing at the same pace to 907,887.
Sri Lanka’s shrinking wireline sector received a boost after Sri Lanka Telecom, the sole wireline operator started to aggressively promote broadband use.
