But the villagers of Yaththalgoda say they don’t want subsidies but expect the government to provide infrastructure facilities instead.

This is the story of their dream bridge, caught between the currents of party politics.

The construction of Yaththalgoda Peace Bridge over Ma Oya stopped, when it was only two pillars old in April -because the government changed that month.

Needless to say the State Development and Construction Corporation (SDCC) was building the bridge.

The pillars were constructed before the April elections. With the change of government construction work came to a stop as was expected.
