The Millennium Challenge Corporation is looking at supporting Sri Lanka’s tsunami reconstruction.

The Millennium Challenge Corporation(MCC) – the US body established to assist developing countries – is looking at supporting Sri Lanka’s tsunami reconstruction. The MCC says Sri Lanka can apply for assistance from its billion-dollar development assistance budget, to rebuild after the December tsunami.

“We are already in discussions as to whether this tragedy (the tsunami) may shift Sri Lanka’s priorities, which, if Sri Lanka chooses, might focus on tsunami-affected areas,” said a statement from the MCC.

During his visit to Sri Lanka in early January the former US Secretary of State, Colin L. Powell also said that Sri Lanka could consider accessing further assistance from the US through the MCC.

Sri Lanka is one of the countries eligible for financial assistance from the MCC in 2005 and submitted an initial proposal for funding in November 2004.

The Sri Lankan government applied for US$ 248 mn to fund local development projects.
