The race for Presidency in Sri Lanka has begun

The Sri Lanka Freedom Party(SLFP) officially announced Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa as the party’s presidential candidate on Thursday. The Sri Lanka Freedom Party(SLFP) officially announced Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa as the party’s presidential candidate on Thursday. The SLFP also announced that Minister of Tourism and Investment Promotions, Anura Bandaranaike, would be Prime Minister in the case of a new SLFP government.

Speaking to journalists, the Secretary General of the SLFP, Maithripala Sirisena, said Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa was nominated as the party’s presidential candidate by President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga.

The nomination was unanimously supported by the rest of the party’s Central Committee, said Sirisena.

Sirisena also said the party was grateful to Minister Anura Bandaranaike for supporting Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa’s nomination.

The party is now looking to from political alliances with other “patriotic” political parties, including its former coalition partner the Marxist JVP and even members of the UNP.
