Tidal wave hits southern coastal belt

A tidal wave had hit Sri Lanka coastal region putting broad swathes of low lying areas under water, eyewitness reports say.

Initial reports indicate that areas ranging from Trincomalee, Yala, Galle and Kaluthara are affected.

Residents of Dehiwala in the Suburbs of Colombo say sea levels have risen.
The southern coastal regions are the main tourist resort areas for the island nation.

No official reports on the extent of the damage are available but residents of coastal regions say some persons playing in the beach have gone missing.
