Tamil Tiger rebels Wednesday accused security forces of attacking them in eastern Sri Lanka, in one of the worst outbreaks of fighting during the current truce, leaving an estimated nine people dead. The Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) said heavily armed men suspected to be army commandos mounted an assault overnight against one of their outposts at Pullumalai, in Batticaloa district.

“Two attackers were wounded in our counter attack,” an LTTE official was quoted as saying on the pro-rebel Tamilnet website. The rebels said one of the wounded succumbed to his injuries, but did not give their own casualties.

However, military sources said their intercepts of LTTE radio communications suggested that the main Tiger group had lost at least eight of their fighters in the overnight attack carried out by a rival rebel faction.

The Tigers maintained that the attack was initiated by army commandos who were assisted by some armed Tamil paramilitary cadres.
