Sri Lanka on Friday offered free Internet surfing for tsunami survivors and said free telephone services will also be made available to those displaced by the disaster. Five Internet cafes would be launched in the first phase at the southern district of Hambantota by Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapakse on Sunday, the Information and Communication Technology Agency of Sri Lanka said.

“Students who have been displaced by the December 26 tsunamis will be asked to eventually run these Internet booths,” the agency said in a statement.

At least a million people were initially displaced when massive walls of water slammed into the island’s coastal regions, but only about half of them remain in government-run relief centres.
