The Ministry announced in March that Lanka Internet would begin a satellite based telecom network under its enhanced voice license.

Enhanced voice has been a much disputed topic in Sri Lanka, with network operators taking the country’s three enhanced voice license holders – Lanka Internet, LankaCom and Electroteks to courts in the past over several issues including provision of voice service in the local and international market.

The focal point of the dispute was the interpretation of enhanced voice, with the three licensees arguing the license allowed them to deploy voice service using internet based technologies while network operators opposed the use of data channels for carrying voice traffic.
