Sep 29, 2015 (LBO) – Sri Lanka should attract more US tourists, making use of the geographical position of the island near to India, in which the US is the top key arrivals generator, an analyst said.

“India can be the number one source market for Sri Lanka, because they are geographically located closer,” Shabori Das, senior analyst of EuroMonitor, a research firm told a tourism forum held in Sri Lanka, Colombo.

“Any traveler who would come to India should be able to attract to Sri Lanka itself.”

“So Sri Lanka should be targeting American tourism coming to India because they are already in the region and they spend more as well.”

She said the other source market that Sri Lanka can look for is Maldives, a country offer almost same products – Sand, Sun, and Beach.

But both Maldives and Sri Lanka does not have US as a top key tourist generating destination.

India’s top tourism generating markets are US, UK, Bangladesh, Canada and Sri Lanka. Das said tourists who are coming to India generally travels to Hong Kong, Malaysia and Singapore.

“These destinations provide travellers with the perfect combination of budget travel along with exotic locations,” Das said.

She added that “Sri Lanka stands in very high growth potential in the near future.”

Sri Lanka had 3,278 American travelers in the month of August 2015 up from 23.8 percent compared to the same month a year earlier.

For the eight months ended August 2015, the Island has 29,833 visitors up 19.6 percent compared to the same period last year.
