Condemning the way traditional subsidies are doled out to the poor, the Freedom Alliance Government is gearing to launch a fresh poverty reduction programme later this week. Samurdhi and Poverty Alleviation Minister Pavithra Vaniarachchi on Monday said successive subsidy schemes and rural infrastructure investments have failed to alleviate poverty and that a fresh participatory approach was needed.

The Suwahas Jana Pubuduwa programme, to be launched at the auspicious hour of 9.43 on Friday morning by Her Excellency the President, will “fan-out” a self-employment programme for some 30,000 low-income families and build basic infrastructure in 13,223 villages.

A total Rs. 11.93 billion has been estimated for the projects with Rs. 2.9 billion coming from the participants of the self-help programme.

30,000 families involved in agriculture, animal husbandry, fisheries, sales and distribution, support services and industrial initiatives will participate in the first phase of the project.
