Sri Lanka will set up a welfare insurance scheme to insure the health risk of public servants and pensioners and the losses of farmers and fishermen. Media Minister and Cabinet Spokesperson Anura Priyadarshana Yapa told Jourlanist in Colombo on Thursday that the National Insurance Trust Fund, proposed in the 2006 budget will payout claims for health bills, revenue loss due to disasters among others.

The Prime Minister in his 2006 budget speech said insurance premium collected from public servants including members of the Police and the armed forces and pensioners will be credit to this fund.

The funds activities will be limited to health insurance and income loss for the agro and fisheries sectors and will not operate in the general insurance industry.

The government will also set up special facilities for public servants and pensioners participating at hospitals.
