Relief organizations working in Sri Lanka are appealing for volunteer medical practitioners to go into tsunami struck areas as the risk of disease mounts. Sarvodaya, one of Sri Lanka's most active charities say they need medical practitioners who can stay at least two days out of Colombo.

"We need people who can stay out of Colombo for at least two days," says Arjun Krishnaratnam, a co-ordinator in charge of relief activities.

"We need professionals who can look after themselves."

Krishnaratnam says final-year medical students from universities have been some of the most active volunteers, who displayed a willingness to work under minimal conditions without complaint.

Sarvodaya has already deployed 3000 volunteers in several areas, and interested persons can offer their services though the organization's website www.sarvodaya.lk.

Sarvodaya has already established a medical camp in Galle and is getting ready to extend the service to other disaster struck areas.
