Apr 30, 2013 (LBO) – Sri Lanka’s Dialog Axia, its parent Telekom Malaysia, UK’s Vodafone and Middle Eastern operators are teaming up to build an 8,000 kilometer undersea cable system, consortium partner Reliance Industries Limited of India said. The cable system is expected to be operating by end 2014.
The ‘Bay of Bengal Gateway’ submarine cable will run from Singapore and Malaysia to Oman and the United Arab Emirates branching out to Mumbai and Chennai in India and to Sri Lanka.
UAE’s Etisalat and Omantel will be the partners in the Middle East.
Reliance Industries said the construction and maintenance and supply contract was inked in Kuala Lumpur on May 30.
“The construction of this cable system is a clear indication of the growing demand for bandwidth at the participating countries,” Reliance said in a statement.
“The markets are expected to see strong growth with the continuous efforts in embracing the broadband technologies and infrastructure expansion.”
