July 01, 2016 (LBO) – Sri Lanka’s state-owned Ceylon Electricity Board has recorded an operating loss of 5,781 million rupees in the first four months of 2016 compared to the profit of 1,837 million rupees recorded in the same period last year.
As per the mid-year fiscal position report, cost per unit without Tax has been increased to 17.54 rupees per kWh in the first quarter of 2016 over 15.07 rupees per kWh recorded in 2015.
The Finance Ministry said CEB was able to reduce its outstanding dues to banks by 2,887 million rupees in the first quarter resulting in total obligations to the banks to reach to 39,055 million rupees during the quarter.
Generation mix comprised with 1,246 GWh Hydro, 1,089 GWh Thermal (Fuel) and 1,143 GWh Thermal (Coal) during the reporting quarter, which has changed from 45:21:34 in 2015 to 36:31:33 in first three months of 2016.
The report said it is due to the decrease of hydro power generation resulted by the dry weather condition prevailed in the country.”
The government has decided to reform CEB by moving towards cost reflective pricing policies while prioritizing emerging industries are subsidized.
As at 30.04.2016, outstanding debt to banks from CEB is 39,055 million rupees.
