The Colombo port could start scanning its cargo for nuclear and radioactive content by end next year under the US Megaports initiative. A visiting US team will end a third round of talks with port officials this week, before setting up radiation detection equipment inside the port in early 2005 to prevent trafficking of dangerous nuclear and radiological materials.

Jeffrey A Miller from the National Nuclear Security Administration here for talks on the Megports Initiative on Wednesday said the meetings with the Sri Lanka Ports Authority, South Asia Gateway Terminal, Customs and Sri Lanka Navy among others had produces all necessary information for a final plan to be made by policy makers back in the United States.

Miller expects implementation to take off in the first quarter of 2005, with the physical infrastructure taking some ten months to set up.
