Commemorative Coin

Dec 16, 2010 (LBO) - Sri Lanka's central bank has issued a 5,000-rupees commemorative coin to mark its 60th anniversary which will be sold to the public from next month, a statement said. The 'Frosted Proof' crown sized silver commemorative coin is the first multi-coloured coin issued by the central bank.

The limited issue of 5,000 rupee coins will be sold at a price of 7,000 rupees through the counters at central bank's head office, money museum provincial offices and on line through the web site www.cbsl.gov.lk

The coin is round in shape with a diameter of 38.61 mm and weighs 28.28 grammes. It will be issued with a certificate of authenticity from the Royal Mint in the UK.

The obverse of the coin depicts the crest of the central bank in colour in the middle and the year 1950 and 2010 appear below the crest.

The words Central Bank of Sri Lanka in Sinhala, Tamil and English appear on the periphery of the coin.

The reverse image of the coin illustrates a tree, which symbolizes the growth and stability of the economy of Sri Lanka.
