Death sentence for killer of journalist Mel Gunasekera

July 05, 2017 (LBO) - Sri Lanka passed the death sentence against the accused in the murder case of journalist Mel Gunasekera at the Colombo High Court on Wednesday.





The judgement was delivered by Justice Piyasena Ranasinghe. Gunasekera was a senior Sri Lankan financial journalist and founder editor of Lanka Business Online.



She was alone in the house, in Battaramulla, while her parents and only brother were away, when found murdered in February 2014. She worked as a correspondent at Agence France-Presse in Colombo, before holding the position of vice president of Fitch Ratings Lanka, a unit of the US-based ratings agency, at the time of her death.



Mel Gunasekera is fondly remembered and sorely missed by her colleagues at Lanka Business Online.
