The Matale District Secretariat will take its business online in a pilot project, which hopes to automate its routine work. The Matele District Secretariat is one of 320 government agents providing a range of citizen services including gun and timber permits, motor vehicle revenue licenses and marriage registrations.

The pilot project will test the viability of shifting some of its licensing services on to an automated database, linked to a local citizens directory.

The project will eventually lead to online citizen services, enabling citizens in remote areas to access government services over an internet connection.

The programme, will later will replicated in other District Secretariats across the island.

The project kicks off with consultants studying the Secretariat’s current processes and recommending changes and strategies to go online.
