May 23, 2008 (LBO) – Sri Lanka's digital self learning initiative, 'Shilpa Sayura', emerged winners in the education category of the Stockholm Challenge 2008 in in Sweden, the state ICT Agency (ICTA) said. The Stockholm Challenge awards were started in 1994 and is now owned by the Royal Institute of Technology (KTH) in Stockholm.

The Shilpa Sayura Project also won the i4d award at the eINDIA 2007 Conference last year.

The project is a digital self learning system for rural students lacking educational resources and teachers.

"This a great indication of success of Sri Lanka's ICT4D initiatives implemented by all of us..." Niranjan Meegammana project director E Fusion private limited the designer of Shilpa Sayura said.

Apart from Shilpa Sayura, the other winners were from India from the culture category, China from the environment category, USA from health, India from public administration, Kenya from economic development and Jamaica in the education category.

Shilpa Sayura was developed under the e-Sri Lanka initiative which aims to use ICT to develop the economy, reduce poverty and improve the quality of life of the people.
