May 10, 2013 (LBO) - Samsung hopes to double phone sales in Sri Lanka in 2013 to one million handsets with smart phones making up 40 percent of the total, official said.

"We have seen a growth in the mobile market of Sri Lanka and the market is adapting to smartphones, especially after the end of the war," said Hyun KI Chang, Managing Director, Colombo branch said.

Demand for smartphones was emerging from former war zones in Jaffna and Baticaloa where a 30-year war ended in 2009, and other outlying areas like Anuradhapura, officials said.

Smartphones have an operating system which can run many applications, similar to a small computer, while remaining connected to the internet compared to so-called feature phones which are now in wide use.
