Dilshan Wirasekara, Chairman of the Colombo Stock Exchange

Aug 13, 2013 (LBO) - The European Union Delegation in Sri Lanka has expressed concern over the killing of unarmed protestors by the military and series of attacks on mosques and churches by religious nationalists. "The right to freedom of peaceful assembly and the right to freedom of worship are fundamental to democratic societies and should be protected by the state," the EU Delegation office said in a statement.

"The European Union looks to the Sri Lankan authorities to ensure justice through speedy, impartial investigations and to enable all Sri Lankans to exercise their human rights freely."

Buddhist nationalists attacked a mosque over the weekend and Muslim legislators say over 25 mosques have been attacked in the recent past.

During killings of protestors who were agitating to close factory they suspected of polluting water, the military also broke sanctuary and entered a church to attack those who had taken refuge there.
