Sri Lanka has agreed to tweak terms of its bilateral Air Service Agreement with France, to allow other EU carriers from its ‘common market’ to fly in here.
The European Union has been trying to implement what it calls its ‘open aviation area’ for its 25 member states.
Broadly, that allows a multilateral clause in traditional bilateral deals between the EU and other states, so that any bilateral agreement will apply equally to all other EU countries.
At talks last month, Sri Lanka agreed to allow the common clause into our bilateral Air Service Agreement with France.
In effect, that means any other EU nation carrier operating out of France, can use the Sri Lanka-France bilateral and its allotted frequencies to fly in here as well.

The amendment however, will have to go up for Cabinet approval before it takes effect.
