Sri Lanka’s Health Ministry allocates Rs 250 million as initial funding for bird-flue prevention programme. “The prevention programme will increase our capabilities to detect bird flue by increasing laboratory facilities and testing facilities,” said Director General of the Department of Animal Production and Health, S K R Amarasekera on Thursday.

The government has already allocated Rs 250 million to start the prevention programme, out of which Rs 100 million goes to the Department of Animal Production.

Health Ministry officials are also negotiating for foreign funding and technical assistance.

So far bird flue has not been reported in Sri Lanka but the island is located between two winter bird migratory routes and local health authorities are worried the visiting birds will also bring in the virus.

“From September to end of March are the times when birds migrate to Sri Lanka. The virus is already spreading in Central Asia and the Europe,” said Amarasekera.
