June 20, 2012 (LBO) – Sri Lanka’s Logiventures, a unit of conglomerate Hayleys PLC, is expanding its fleet of car carriers to meet the growing demand to transport vehicles being cleared from the southern port of Hambantota. Logiventures is also investing in a vehicle transit facility close to the Hambantota port, to facilitate clearing, inspection and transportation of vehicles discharged at the port by roll-on roll-off (Ro-Ro) vessels, a statement said Wednesday.

The initial capacity of the facility is approximately 700 vehicles,” the company said.

The expansion drive comes, after the firm began offering comprehensive automotive logistics solutions to help vehicle importers to clear their consignments at the Hambantota port.

Sri Lanka shifted clearing of vehicle shipments from the main port in Colombo to the new port in Hambantota in May, as part of the government plans to develop the southern port.

Logiventures first shipment of 850 vehicles was cleared on June 15, when the NYK Line vessel Cygnus Leader called at the port.

Logiventures said it would work closely with NYK Line, to expand its engagement with the automotive industry in Sri Lanka.
