Suspected Tamil Tiger rebels late Monday fired a grenade into a police post in the district of Vavuniya, killing one constable, the police said, adding that fire was returned but it was not clear if the rebels suffered casualties.

Police said the rebels had carried out a similar attack on another sentry post in Trincomalee, wounding a soldier.
