Heavy Rains and Floods force a 660,000 Sri Lankans from homes

Dec 26, 2014 (LBO) – Heavy raining and flooding in Sri Lanka has forced about 663228 people out of their homes, the disaster management center (DMC) said Thursday. It is also said, that cloudy skies and intermittent showers or thundershowers will occur over most parts of the country and very heavy falls are also likely at some places today.

Sri Lanka depends on monsoon rains for irrigation and power generation, but the seasonal downpours frequently cause death and damage to property in low-lying areas as well as mountainous regions.

The island's two main monsoon seasons run from May to September and December to February.

About 185079 families were affected and four people have died, the center said.

Eastern province has been reported as the worst affecting area with 556343 people affected by flooding and 2 deaths (DMC) said.

The sea areas off the coast extending from Puttalam to Kankesanthurai via Galle and Pottuvil may be very rough at times and dangerous as the winds can strengthen up to 80 kmph at times,today DMC said.
