The initial findings on the impact of India’s Sethusamudram ship canal project on Sri Lanka, will be submitted to the government this month. The initial findings, relating to specific areas, will be submitted to the inter-ministerial committee set up to study the impacts of India’s Sethusamudram project, said a press release from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Wednesday.

The Sethusamudram project is a shipping canal that India hopes to build by dredging Adam’s Bridge and parts of the Palk Bay North of Sri Lanka.

The canal will allow ships to access the East coast of India without circumventing Sri Lanka, reducing the journey by around 400 nautical miles.

The project caused concern in Sri Lanka because of possible environmental impact and economic losses due to reduced transhipment handling.
