"This project aims to reinforce the transmission network of Sri Lanka, by rehabilitating the Vavuniya-Kilinochchi 132 kv transmission line and constructing a grid substation at Kilinochchi," said a Finance Ministry statement.

The project will be carried out over a three year period, starting mid this year, under the Ceylon Electricity Board.

Before work on the transmission line can begin, de-mining of the areas concerned will be carried out in coordination with the Ministry of Relief, Rehabilitation and Reconciliation.

The loan is on concessionary terms under a new preferential scheme for peace building adopted by the government of Japan.

The loan is for 40 years, including a 10 year grace period, and interest is 0.
