Feb 16, 2018 (LBO) – Chairman of the Election Commission, Mahinda Deshapriya today met Speaker Karu Jayasuriya after successfully concluding the local government election. Speaker Karu Jayasuriya thanked every officer in the Election Department and other government offices who participated in this exercise. Chairman of the Election Commission informed the Speaker about a possible amendment to the current legislation with regard to the 25 percent women representation. Deshapriya said the new local government authorities will be formed during the next month. Several reports said President Sirisena has informed Prime Minister to resign from the post and allow Speaker Karu Jayasuriya to become the new Prime Minister as one option to overcome the current political deadlock. Meanwhile, releasing a statement, UNP Mayoral candidate for the Colombo Municipal Council Rosy Senanayake said 25 percent quota for women has to be implemented immediately. “To now say that this minimum 25% of women council members cannot be implemented is disingenuous and in bad faith,” she said. “Commission of Elections and the Political Parties should ensure that all Councils are constituted with a minimum of 25% of women members and I strongly urge them to do so without delay.
