Mahinda’s Pohottuwa begins it’s journey with a bang

Feb 12, 2018 (LBO) - Sri Lanka's former President, Mahinda Rajapakse led Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP)  contesting under the Pohottuwa symbol has claimed victory in over 230 local government bodies at the recently held polls. Voter turnout was unusually high officials said with the final figure expected to be higher than 70 percent. The SLPP got just over 45 percent of the popular vote at Saturday's election while the UNP got a little over 32 percent. The JVP secured 6.2 percent. The SLPP gained control of almost all local government bodies in the Kegalle, Ratnapura, Anuradhapura districts while the United National party won 37 Local government bodies in the Colombo, Nuwara Eliya, Kandy and Kalutara districts. The United Peoples Freedom Allience  secured victory in nine bodies while the Illankai Tamil Arasu Kachchi (ITAK) gained control of 28 bodies. The Ceylon Workers Congress won five institutions in the up country while the SLMC took control of three institutions. The UNP retained control in its strong hold, the Colombo Municipal Council with a lead of over 70,000 votes against the SLPP by securing 60 seats in the council. Election monitors confirmed that the 2018 Local Government election is the most peaceful election ever held in the country after a lapse of several decades. They said that no major incident was recorded from any part of the country and no death was reported as a result of election related violence.
