Majority of Parliamentarians want Speaker to reconvene the house – Ranil

October 29, 2018 (LBO) - Ranil Wickremesinghe addressing foreign correspondents at Temple Trees has said that the majority of MPs want the Speaker to reconvene the house.

Speaking to correspondents this afternoon at the Prime Minister's official residence, the UNP leader Ranil Wickramsinghe reiterated that the supreme authority of the country is the Parliament.

As such the current constitional crisis can be resolved by summoning Parliament. He stated that there have been requests by the TNA, SLMC, the JVP and the UNP and UNF to the Hon. Speaker to summon parliament. Parliament can be summoned anytime soon, on the speakers prerogative according to Wickremesinghe.

Wickremesinghe continued on to say that post the 19th Amendment to the constitution, the powers of the Presidency have been curtailed. The President cannot dissolve parliament, he cannot sack the cabinet of ministers, nor can he sack the Prime Minister. The PM ceases to hold office on his death, his removal by a No Confidence Motion, or his resignation.

One of two men who claim to be Sri Lanka's PM, Ranil Wickremesinghe was confident that he had the support of the largest number of MPs and challenged Mahinda Rajapaksa to recommence sittings at the parliament to resolve this .

He further stated that the swearing in of PM Mahinda Rajapakse was illegal and any officer of state who carries out an illegal order will be prosecuted.

A statement on the Speaker on these matters is expected.
