Maldives to regulate tourist weddings

Oct 29, 2010 (LBO) - Maldives Islands will issue 'strict guidelines' on tourist weddings following an incident where resort staff mocked a foreign couple who were renewing their wedding wows at a beach ceremony. Maldives' President Mohamed Nasheed had expressed disgust at the incident in a radio address and described the behaviour of those involved as "absolutely disgraceful," his office said in a statement.

Staff at Vilu Reef Resort, had mocked the smiling couple who did not understand the local language calling them infidels, saying their children will be illegitimate according to a video which appeared on Youtube subtitled in English.

"The President noted that bad behaviour, such as that depicted in the YouTube video, can cause enormous damage to the country´s tourism industry," the statement said.

"The government has launched a full scale investigation into what happened in Vilu Reef Resort.
