SriLankan Airlines will deploy their first mainline freighter aircraft to carry the increasing cargo loads to China and the Middle East. The airline is looking for a wide-bodied A 310 aircraft to join two smaller regional freighters which feed the Colombo hub.

Traffic to the BIA has been increasing in the last two years as it emerges as an important hub for the sub continent.

“Shortly we are hoping to get a mainline 36 tonne aircraft to expand our operations primarily into China and Middle East.

We are hoping get the aircraft in the next couple of months,” says Peter Hill, CEO, SriLankan.

“It will supplement existing scheduled passenger service where we carry the freight in the belly,” he says.

Cargo handling capacity at the Colombo airport will double next year with the addition of a new warehousing facility.
