The Telecom regulator and top government bureaucrats held a public discussion on a new regulatory structure as other operators opposed SLTs plans to acquire Wireless Local Loop (WLL) operator Lanka Bell.
Telecom watchdog TRC together with support from the public interest program unit of the Economic Reforms Ministry is planning an overhaul of telecom regulation.rn

rnExperts at the public hearing said it was time the country adopted different standards for regulating industry players.rn

rnTRC is trying to implement an Asymmetric Regulatory Structure, essentially applying different criteria to regulate dominant players from the ones applied to the rest of the industry. rn

rnThe move comes on the back of industry opposition to SLTs bid to acquire Lanka Bell.

SLT already fully owns cellular operator Mobitel and others fear that the acquisition of Lanka Bell will create a monopolistic situation.
