Neville Fernando hospital handed over to government

July 17, 2017 (LBO) – Dr Neville Fernando on Monday signed an agreement to hand over the Neville Fernando hospital to the government.

As per the agreement, the Dr Neville Fernando Sri Lanka – Russia Friendship Hospital in Malabe will be administered independently by a board of directors from August.

The decision was taken following protests by university students and trade unions including the Government Medical Officers’ Association, demanding the takeover of SAITM.

The hospital established in 2013 is a hi-tech multi specialty tertiary care teaching hospital.

Medical investigations such as computerized tomography (CT scan), Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI), ultra sound scanning and all the other medical laboratory investigations can be performed at the hospital.

It is also one of the largest public hospitals in Sri Lanka with 210 permanent beds capable of accommodating about 1,000 patients a day.

It was the teaching hospital to the South Asian Institute of Technology and Medicine (SAITM) and was the first private teaching hospital in the country as well.

The hospital is a brainchild of its Chairman Dr.Fernando and its main purposes were to provide the clinical training facility for the medical students of the SAITM and to provide high quality private medical care.
