Jan 06, 2017 (LBO) – Sri Lankan government has already identified lands for the industry needs in the country for the coming 10 to 15 years, Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe said. Addressing a gathering at the RIGID Tyre Plant event Wickremesinghe said the government is ready to formulate new laws for investors while encouraging them with incentives. “We identified lands for industrial zones in Kandy, Galle, Matara, Hambantota, Monaragala, Trincomalee as well as in North Western Province and Western Province,” he said. “We don’t need to kick out ordinary people after taking their lands with no reason. 95 percent of the identified lands are state lands with no use.” Wickremesinghe said the government will supply electricity and water in order to start new industries and hotels under lease basis. He said Thailand is the country that introduced this system to Sri Lanka and said Thailand Industrial Zone Authority is entitled to identify lands for zones in Thailand. “Thailand’s biggest industrial zone consists of 10,000 acres but they are operating there without any issue,” Wickremesinghe said. “Our biggest industrial zone is 4,000 acres; this kind of zones is also operating in Tamil Nadu, India.” Speaking on the Hambantota land issue, Wickremesinghe said that they will not allow any damage to the 72 archeological places that have already been identified in the Hambantota area. “When we are putting up factories in Hambantota area, tourists will also visit there,” Prime Minister said.
