Nov 1, 2006 (LBO) – Banking giant HSBC tied up with Sri Lanka’s General Post Office on Wednesday to widen customer access to general banking facilities.

Hong Kong and Shanghai Bank customers will be able to access their accounts through 15 General Post Offices (GPOs) which will offer cash and cheque deposits, credit card services and purchasing of stationary using the HSBC Credit Card.

This is an online system. The cash deposited during the day will be realized to the account by 3 pm. Transactions after this time will be realized the next day, Chandima Liyanage, Manager HSBC told LBO.

The banking facility is to initially be rolled out to the General Post Offices in Gampaha, Negombo, Galle, Kandy, Kalutara, Kegalle and Kurunegala.

Colombo city, Dehiwala, Nugegoda, Kotahena, Moratuwa, Mt. Lavinia and Panadura have also been selected for the rollout, with the system on a trial basis for three months.

The system will provide the account holder with a receipt of the transaction. The transactions through GPOs will be between one hundred rupees and 30,000 rupees, Rukmankan Sivaloganathan Manager Product Management Global payme
