Sri Lanka's Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe said that he proposes to privatize loss-making SriLankan Airlines.
SriLankan Airlines has been fraught with challenges over the past three years starting with the Easter Sunday attacks in April 2019 that led to a decline in tourist arrivals in the immediate aftermath, followed by the onset of the pandemic in the first quarter of 2020.
“In the 20/21 year alone its loss was 45 billion rupees. By 31 March 2021, its total losses were 372 billion rupees.
Even if we privatize it, we have to bear the loss," the premier highlighted.
"This loss has to be borne by the poor who has not set foot in an aircraft.
