Torrential rains threaten to hamper relief work and raise the risk of disease in the Eastern coastal belt of Sri Lanka. The Metrological Department told Lanka Business Online on Friday that heavy rains were forecasted for the day and going into the weekend.

Initial reports from the region indicate that the already difficult aid, four days after Sunday’s disaster was slowing down due to the wet weather.

Medical officials are also concerned that the wet weather would contribute to the spread of water borne diseases like cholera and Diarrhea.

The risk is higher as survivors crowd together in whatever shelters are available.

While the December to February seasonal North East monsoons are affecting immediate relief work, officials also fear that continuing rains could hamper the reconstruction and resettlement effort.

More worrying is the effect of the weather phenomenon el-Niño, which already this year delayed the South West monsoons.
