Road Support

Nov 24, 2009 (LBO) – The European Union (EU) said repairs to a key road linking Sri Lanka's south with the east that was damaged by a tsunami had been completed with EU and Asian Development Bank aid. The 158-kilometer stretch of the southern coastal road linking the southern Matara town with Wellawaya towards the south-east was completed at a cost of 4.6 billion rupees.

"This road will now serve as a link promoting economic, social and cultural exchanges and friendship between the people of the South and the East of the country," Bernard Savage, EU head of delegation to Sri Lanka and the Maldives said.

The EU said eight new bridges were built and 29 bridges were repaired and widened, while an asphalt concrete overlay was laid during repairs to the southern coastal road which was badly damaged by the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami.

In addition to the Southern coastal road, a 78-kilometre stretch of road from Siyamabalanduwa in the eastern Amparai district to Akkaraipattu via Pottuvil on the east coast is to be rebuilt by the EU with ADB help at a cost of 3.8 billion rupees, the EU said in a statement.

Repairs to the roads are part of the EU's overall 24.2 billion rupee post-tsunami aid
