Ruwan sets the record straight on Rupavahini

September 11, 2019 (LBO) - Minister of Mass Media and State Minister of Defence Ruwan Wijewardene has released a statement on the President's decision to gazette the Rupavahini Corporation under the Defence Ministry.

In his letter the to President Maithripala Sirisena he states that the President's decision is problematic and "It will be impossible to prevent this action by you (President Sirisena) being construed as a threat to media freedom in the country.

In his statement the Minister also sheds light on the mismanagement of the Rupavahini Corporation and his reasoning for pursing changes in it's board of directors.

The President's actions have been widely criticised among media professionals and civil society.

SLRC is operating at a loss. Through Treasury, tax payers have been funding SLRC’s salary bill of Rs 40m per month. For months I’ve been trying to change the management but was obstructed by the president. Latest attempt resulted in @MaithripalaS gazetting SLRC under his purview.
