Sri Lanka’s air travel safety measures all in place and enforced, says the island’s Civil Aviation Authority. The Aviation Authority’s assurance comes after five airline accidents in other parts of the world, within the month of August.

This week, the United Nations civil aviation agency – the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) – asked its 188 contracting countries to rectify any remaining air safety gaps, following the string of accidents.

“ICAO and its Contracting States recognize that it takes more than rules and standards to prevent accidents.

They must be implemented and enforced,” said a statement from ICAO.

In addition, countries are asked to set up national safety oversight systems, for close scrutiny of all components of aviation infrastructure including airlines, airports, air navigation systems, as well as aviation legislation and civil aviation administrations.
